Tasting Notes: Deep ruby. The 2021 San Lorenzo is the estate’s most aristocratic red: black cherry, dark plum, crushed violet and sweet spice on the nose, with maritime nuances of wild fennel, salt and sun-warmed stone. Full-bodied and layered on the palate, with dense but polished tannins and a spine of fresh acidity — the Conero’s limestone and sea influence in a glass. The finish is long and savory, closing on dark berry, cocoa, licorice and a saline echo. Already impressive, it will unfold for another 8-12 years.
Notes: San Lorenzo is Umani Ronchi’s historic single vineyard, planted on the south-facing slopes of the Conero peninsula near Numana, where Montepulciano reaches a depth and minerality found nowhere else. The 2021 vintage was balanced and structured. Fruit from old vines is fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of French oak barriques and larger casks, marrying polish with the vineyard’s distinctive marine-mineral character.
Food Pairing: Excellent with grilled lamb, braised beef, wild mushroom pasta, aged Pecorino, or roast pork with rosemary.
Winery Story: Umani Ronchi was founded in 1957 in Cupra Marittima and has become one of central Italy’s benchmark certified-organic estates. The Conero peninsula — its limestone core rising from the Adriatic — is the firm’s spiritual home for reds, and the San Lorenzo vineyard has produced its most prestigious bottling for decades.
