Grape(s): Montepulciano

Location: Rosso Conero Riserva DOCG, Conero peninsula, Marche, Italy

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby with garnet highlights. Cumaro is Umani Ronchi’s richest, most structured red: black cherry, dark plum, dried fig, cocoa, tobacco and sweet spice on the nose, over a distinctive mineral-marinne undercurrent from the Conero’s limestone slopes. Full-bodied and densely woven, with thick yet refined tannins and a long, warm finish of dark berry, licorice, graphite and sea salt. A Riserva of real breeding — approachable now with decanting, best from 2027 onward and easily cellarable for a decade.

Notes: Cumaro takes its name from Monte Conero’s ancient designation, and the wine comes from the estate’s oldest Montepulciano vines on the mountain’s south-facing slopes. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, it matures around 14 months in French oak barriques followed by extended bottle age before release — the formula that earned Rosso Conero Riserva its DOCG promotion. The 2021 vintage was balanced and structured, giving wines of depth and restraint.

Food Pairing: Excellent with braised beef, grilled lamb, wild boar ragù, aged Pecorino, or roast game.

Winery Story: Umani Ronchi was founded in 1957 in Cupra Marittima and is today one of central Italy’s benchmark certified-organic estates. Alongside the San Lorenzo, Cumaro represents the summit of the firm’s Conero range — a wine that helped define the quality of Montepulciano on the Adriatic coast.
