Grape(s): Falanghina
Location: Sannio, Campania, Italy
Tasting Notes: Pale lemon-green. Ripe pineapple, citrus and white flowers on the nose, with honeysuckle and toasted almond on the palate. Lively acidity keeps it bright and medium-bodied through a clean, mineral finish.
Notes: Falanghina from hillside vineyards in the Sannio zone around Benevento, a grape the estate did much to rescue from obscurity. Fermented in stainless steel and bottled young to keep the perfume intact.
Food Pairing: White fish, shellfish, fried seafood, and mozzarella or vegetable antipasti.
Winery Story: Mastroberardino, based in Atripalda in Irpinia, is the family most closely associated with reviving Campania's ancient grapes, Greco, Fiano, Aglianico and Falanghina. The family has farmed there since the 1750s and was central to the rediscovery of the vineyards buried at Pompeii.
