Grape(s): Tinta Negra

Location: Madeira, Portugal

Tasting Notes: Deep amber color; complex aromas of toasted nuts, caramel, dried orange peel, fig, baking spices, and smoky sea-salt notes; medium-dry on the palate with vibrant acidity balancing flavors of toffee, roasted coffee, citrus marmalade, and dried fruits; long, layered finish with remarkable freshness and depth.

Notes: “Declaration of Independence” Madeira was created by The Rare Wine Co. as part of its Historic Series, honoring the wines enjoyed during America’s colonial period. Produced and bottled by Vinhos Barbeito on the island of Madeira, the wine is crafted in a medium-dry style inspired by the historic Madeira wines consumed by America’s founding fathers. Careful aging in seasoned oak casks under Madeira’s traditional estufagem and canteiro aging methods develops the wine’s signature oxidative complexity while preserving bright acidity and balance.

Food pairing: Pairs beautifully with roasted nuts, aged cheeses, mushroom dishes, smoked meats, foie gras, pecan pie, crème brûlée, and dark chocolate desserts.

Winery Story: The Rare Wine Co. Historic Series was created to revive the style of Madeira wines historically favored in early America, particularly during the Revolutionary era. The “Declaration of Independence” bottling commemorates the role Madeira played in colonial society, where it was famously used to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The wines are produced in partnership with Vinhos Barbeito, one of Madeira’s most respected producers, founded by Mário Barbeito and now led by Ricardo Freitas. Barbeito is internationally recognized for combining traditional Madeira craftsmanship with precision and freshness, producing wines celebrated for their balance, complexity, and historic authenticity.
