Alcohol: 14.5 %
Grape(s): 80 % Grenache, 12 % Mourvèdre, 8 % Syrah
Location: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France
Tasting Notes: Deep garnet with bricking at the rim. The nose is incredibly complex and mature, revealing layers of kirsch, blackcurrant liqueur, aged leather, smoked meats, and dried garrigue herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent yet remarkably seamless. The tannins are melted and silky, supporting flavors of plum, spice cake, and earthy truffle that linger on a long, expansive finish.
Notes: The "Cuvée Centenaire" is only produced in exceptional vintages from a single plot in the Farguerol sector, featuring Grenache vines planted in 1889. The Grenache is aged in concrete vats to preserve its fruit purity, while the Syrah and Mourvèdre spend time in small oak barrels. The 2000 vintage is considered one of the legendary releases of this cuvée, showcasing the incredible depth and elegance that centenarian vines can provide.
Food Pairing: Roasted venison, slow-cooked lamb shanks with rosemary, beef Wellington, or rich dishes featuring black truffles.
Winery Story: Domaine André Brunel, often referred to by its primary label "Les Cailloux," has been in the family for generations, but it was André Brunel who elevated it to international fame. Now managed by his son Fabrice, the estate is renowned for its meticulous vineyard management and a style that balances traditional Rhône power with a polished, modern precision. The name "Les Cailloux" refers to the famous large quartz stones (galets roulés) that characterize their terroir.
