Alcohol: 12.5 %
Grape(s): 100 % Merlot
Location: Monticello, Virginia, USA
Tasting Notes: Vibrant magenta and purple hues in the glass. The nose is an explosion of primary fruit, featuring candied cherry, wild raspberry, and a touch of blueberry, with the classic carbonic "bubblegum" and violet floral notes. On the palate, it is light-to-medium-bodied, incredibly fresh, and "crunchy," with low tannins and high-toned acidity. It finishes with a clean, juicy burst of red fruit that makes it highly smashable, especially when served slightly chilled.
Notes: Part of the limited "Artist Series," this wine uses carbonic maceration—a process in which whole clusters of Merlot are fermented in a CO2-enriched environment before being pressed. This technique, overseen by winemaker Matthieu Finot, emphasizes the grape's bright, fruity esters while minimizing tannin extraction. The vintage captures the fruit's energy with minimal sulfur additions and a focus on early-drinking pleasure.
Food Pairing: Excellent with casual fare like wood-fired pizza, gourmet burgers, or a charcuterie board featuring salty hams. It also pairs surprisingly well with spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes due to its low tannin and bright fruit.
Winery Story: King Family Vineyards is a cornerstone of the Monticello AVA in Crozet, Virginia. Known for their world-class Viognier and Merlot-based blends, the estate also pushes boundaries with experimental small-batch releases. The Artist Series showcases the intersection of local Virginia art and creative winemaking, often highlighting alternative techniques that reflect the modern, innovative spirit of East Coast viticulture.
