Alcohol: 13.5 %
Grape(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Location: Moulis-en-Médoc AOC, Bordeaux, France
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby with a garnet rim. Cabernet-led and classic: cassis, blackberry and dark cherry on the nose, over graphite, cedar, tobacco and a touch of sweet oak. Medium-to-full bodied with lift and vibrance on the palate — sweet, ripe, juicy red fruit threaded with Moulis’s cool, stony minerality — framed by polished, firm tannins and a long finish that closes on dark chocolate and citrus zest. Approachable in its youth; it will reward 3-6 years of cellar time and drink well through 2032.
Notes: Château Poujeaux’s classic blend is roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a seasoning of Petit Verdot from the estate’s gravel-capped vineyards in Moulis, the smallest and highest appellation of the Médoc. Bordeaux élevage in French oak builds the cedar and graphite signature. The 2020 vintage gave pure, vibrant reds with ripe fruit and fresh structure.
Food Pairing: Excellent with rib of beef, roast lamb, duck confit, grilled sausages, and aged Comté or Pyrenees sheep’s cheese.
Winery Story: Château Poujeaux is one of Moulis-en-Médoc’s benchmark estates — for decades a leading Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel and a perennial contender for the appellation’s crown. Since 2008 it has been owned by the Cuvelier family, whose investment has lifted the property further still. For quality-per-dollar, Poujeaux remains one of the Médoc’s great secrets; it reaches the US through importer Monsieur Touton.
