Alcohol: 14%
Grape(s): 60% Shiraz, 20% Petit Verdot, and 20% Grenache
Location: Stellenbosch, South Africa
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby with purple rim. Aromas of black cherry, mulberry, and plum are layered with notes of cracked pepper, lavender, and baking spice. The palate is medium-to-full bodied, showing juicy dark fruit framed by fine tannins, lively acidity, and touches of cacao and smoky oak. The finish is smooth, peppery, and lingering.
Notes: Thelema Mountain Red is assembled from estate-grown parcels on the Simonsberg slopes. Each variety is fermented separately in small open tanks, then matured for 12 months in a mix of older French barriques to preserve fruit purity while adding subtle complexity.
Food Pairing: Excellent with braaied meats, hearty stews, burgers, spicy sausages, and hard cheeses. Versatile enough for relaxed weeknight dinners yet characterful for entertaining.
Winery Story: Thelema Mountain Vineyards, founded in 1983 by the Webb family, sits high on the Helshoogte Pass overlooking Stellenbosch. Pioneers of sustainable farming and minimal-intervention cellar work, Thelema crafts wines that reflect their cool mountain terroir—vibrant fruit, natural balance, and distinctive regional personality.
