Alcohol: 14.5 %
Grape(s): Montepulciano
Location: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, Abruzzo, Italy
Tasting Notes: Intense, impenetrable ruby. Pervasive and complex on the nose: morello cherry, kirsch and ripe blackberry, lifted by violet and a touch of warm spice. Full-bodied and generous on the palate — rich dark fruit wrapped in velvety, supple tannins — with fresh acidity keeping it lively and a persistent, fruity finish. A plush, crowd-pleasing Italian red with enough structure to stand up to food; drinking well now and over the next 2-3 years.
Notes: 100% Montepulciano from gravelly, medium-textured soils in Abruzzo — a terroir that ripens the variety fully while retaining its aromatic brightness. Fermented and aged briefly in stainless steel and oak to emphasize fruit and softness. The 2024 vintage gave fresh, vibrant reds rated 89 points by Wine Enthusiast.
Food Pairing: Excellent with pasta with meat sauce, pizza, roasted lamb and pork, grilled sausages, and aged Pecorino.
Winery Story: Prope is the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo flagship of Velenosi, one of central Italy’s most awarded family estates, and is imported to the US by Baron François. The name marks the estate’s pursuit of Montepulciano’s purest expression: rich, complex and unmistakably Italian, at a price that makes it an easy weeknight favorite.
