One day, while walking through the “jarilla”, he discovered one of these birds sleeping. The partridge, hearing him approach, quickly flew away. In 1952 Juan Muñoz López decided to leave his hometown Andalucia, in southern Spain, and he and his family emigrated to Mendoza, Argentina seeking new horizons. An oak forest cut down between 1490 and 1542 was replaced by “plantings of vines and trees”, and the old name “Bosco di Gica” (“Gica Wood”) no longer seemed appropriate. The new name, “Zardin” (“Garden”), meanwhile, was perfectly suited to the charm of this rediscovered land. In a land register entry of 1717, it was changed to “Zardini” and subsequent Napoleonic and Austrian maps gave it the name of “Giardino”. The medieval intuition regarding the innate qualities of this land for wine growing was reflected in the subsequent viticultural approach. This is difficult territory, but one which is generous to those who dedicate their energies to its steep slopes. The soil is chalky, lean, and shallow, lying directly on the bedrock, which emerges in places. The vines cling to chestnut poles in south-facing parallel rows, echoing the typical uneven contours of these slopes. The incessant, painstaking care needed to farm here confirms the “cru” status of this vineyard.

The result is a “dry” wine, which brings together all the qualities of the Prosecco area: elegance, harmony and freshness, but above all fruit salad aromas. This recognition of merit is just one of the many awards our wines have received, that we still today remember with affection and pride. The cool climate and the terroir of the Kamptal allow us to extract clear and, precise aromas. We focus on Kamptal’s main varieties: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, which are capable of displaying the unique features of our land”. Co-Founders Trevor Clough and Jason Humphries had been looking for an idea for their own start-up for years. They asked themselves, if English sparkling wine was as good as the newspapers said, how come they had never encountered it in stores, on wine lists, at quintessential British events, etc.? According to the vintage, Christophe produces a Vouvray Sec, Vouvray Demi-Sec, Vouvray Moelleux and a Vouvray Méthode Traditionnelle Brut and Demi-Sec.

Alcohol: 15%

Grape(s): Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault

Localization: Côte du Rhône, Rhone Valley, France

Tasting Notes: The color is purple-tinged garnet. It is aged in oak casks before being bottled and then matured in bottle for at least 3 years before being sold. The year on the label is the year of bottling. Crusted Port is not fined or filtered before being bottled, it will continue to develop and mature in bottle like a Vintage Port, and will throw a thick natural sediment or “Crust”, hence the name “Crusted Port.”

Food Pairing: Stand the bottle upright for a few hours before decanting. It was the creation of John Graham and his wife Caroline Churchill in 1981. John Graham is a scion of the Graham port family, which has given its name to excellent ports for almost two centuries.

Churchill's is the only port wine producer who begins with wines produced only from grapes in Grade A vineyards, as designated by the Port Wine Institute. He then blends them into a range of ports, which, being true to the traditions of port wines, are very distinctive.

Johnny is the fifth generation of his family to make port in the Douro, but Churchill’s is a first-generation company.

Johnny was born and raised in Porto as the youngest son of the Graham port family. After his father sold the family business in 1970, Johnny committed himself to learning the craft of port-making on his own. From age 20, he worked in the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, on the rabelo boats bringing barrels of young port downriver, and in the cellars and tasting rooms of Vila Nova da Gaia. Apprenticing under the studied eye of port master John Smithe of Cockburn Smithe’s, Johnny quickly learned the art of winemaking and by his late 20s had developed a reputation as one of the trade’s best tasters.

Johnny could have had his pick of winemaking roles at the top vintage houses, but that wasn’t his style. Port was more than a trade to Johnny: it was his passion and art. He was not content to be a steward of a heritage style. He wanted to make his own mark on the 200-year-old Douro D.O.C. and bring a new style to port drinkers around the world.

Thus, at just 29 years old he set out to do something crazy: found an official port shipper in the ancient entrepot of Vila Nova de Gaia, which no one had done in over 50 years.

In a partnership with his wife and two brothers, Churchill’s was born, producing its first vintage in 1982, more than a full year before officially qualifying as a registered port shipper. The company was named after Johnny’s wife, Caroline Churchill.

Over the next several decades, the production grew to include a full range of ruby and tawny ports. But one thing has remained the same – a commitment to vintage quality port with a dry fresh style that is uniquely and classically Johnny Graham’s.

In 1999, Churchill’s acquired Quinta da Gricha, Johnny’s fifth and final child. He had long had his eye on the 50 hectare grade-A vineyard, going back to his days with Cockburn-Smithe’s in the 1970s. Owning and operating its own vineyard was a watershed moment for the start-up Churchill’s, providing control over grape supply for the first time and paving the way for entrance into Douro still wines.

In 2002, Johnny teamed up with young Portuguese winemaker and fellow wine rogue Ricardo Pinto Nunes, and together they have created the Churchill’s Estates and Quinta da Gricha ranges of still Douro wines. Through these wines, Johnny and Ricardo aim to combine the rigor and discipline of vintage port making with the spirit of experimentation at the heart of the new Douro wine movement.

Alcohol: 13%

Grape(s): Vermentino

Localization: Liguria, Italy

Tasting Notes: The Vermentino ‘Grey Label’ is all about freshness and it is considered by many the best expression of true Ligurian Vermentino. He planted vineyards and constructed a winery of redwood and native limestone in time to produce the first vintage of Monte Bello in 1892. The historic building now serves as the Ridge production facility.

Though Ridge began as a Cabernet winery, by the mid-60s, it had produced several Zinfandels including the Geyserville. Known primarily for its red wines, Ridge has also made limited amounts of Chardonnay since 1962.

The Ridge approach is straightforward: find the most intense and flavorful grapes, guide the natural process, draw all the fruit's richness into the wine. Decisions on when to pick, when to press, when to rack, what varietals and what parcels to include and when to bottle, are based on taste. To retain the nuances that increase complexity, Ridge winemakers handle the grapes and wine as gently as possible. Here is a white wine with both bite and body, sweet white fruit wrapped in a refreshingly light, citrus lining. Exactly what Pouilly-Fumé is supposed to be—balanced, fresh and fruity, and at its heart a stony, flint-inspired soul.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/files/w4KmnTNGTZODKhnnIaHYtw_pb_x960_c546f7bb-7cb7-4c5f-9413-c6fe935da04b.png?v=1775336843
chateau-lalande-saint-julien-2018
Château Lalande Saint Julien 2023

Alcohol: 14%

Grape(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Localization: Bordeaux, France

Tasting Notes: Bright, intense ruby color. The area is well known for their great wines which are heavily dominated by Grand Cru Classé properties. However, Lalande is unique because is it one of the very few, small, non-classified estates. All of this has resulted in dramatic improvements in the quality of the wine, receiving press accolades and high ratings every year.

Today, Lalande is producing an exceptional elegant and refined wine, that is still available at affordable prices for the consumer.

The vineyard is 15.5 hectares (38 acres) in size planted mostly on gravely soil with low yields. The alcoholic fermentation lasts for 10 days and 50% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels. Finally, the wine ages 12 months in 40% new French oak before being bottled. A dream come true, so much so that, in the Sixties, it even conquered the President of the French Republic Charles De Gaulle. In 1973 the baton passed to Giancarlo Palla, who made an equally important contribution to the territory. First of all, bringing the culture of sparkling wine to the area, traditionally linked to red wines.
