Alexis is the seventh generation to work his family’s land in the village of Viré which is situated in the Haut-Maconnais, 18km north of Macon. In 1928 Alexis’ great grandparents joined with other winegrowers of Viré to create a cooperative which enabled them to both vinify and commercialize their wines. Alexis’ parents were working with this same cooperative until they decided to build a small winery, “le chai duchet” so that Alexis could produce estate-bottled wines. Before rejoining his parents, Alexis traveled extensively doing winemaking stints in unusual places such as Margaret River and Ontario Lake as well as closer to home in Meursault and the Savoie. He has inherited 9.5 hectares from his parents; 7ha in Viré-Clessé and 2.5ha in Macon-Villages. Additionally, Alexis rents 1.5h of old vines in Viré-Clessé. Alexis’father stopped using chemicals in the vineyard during the 1980s when he saw problems of erosion and for the last ten years, he has farmed his land organically despite the fact that the cooperative offered him no extra money for his grapes. Alexis is continuing in the same philosophy although does not want to apply for certification.

In 1937 the wines of Viré sold for the same price as those of Pouilly-Fuisse and when the Appellation D’Origine Controlée was offered to the wine producers of Viré in that year, they refused because they didn’t want to pay the extra tax that came along with the upgraded status. The thinking was that they already sold all the wine they produced at a good price, so why pay the government more money just to have official recognition. In 1963, having regretted their earlier decision they applied to the INAO for recognition and were denied, a decision based primarily on the small size of Viré’s vineyards which totaled 120 hectares. Finally, after many years of pressing their case with the INAO, the growers of Viré decided to join forces with the growers in the neighboring village of Clessé to create a joined appellation. In 1997 the INAO voted to accept their proposal and the appellation of Viré-Clessé was born.

At Le Chai Duchet all harvesting is done early in the morning by machine. Having only started his own label, "Roses de Jeanne" and producing his own wines in 2000, he is very quickly garnering a reputation as Champagne's most talented new wine producer / Cedric was just awarded the title as Champagne's finest winemaker for the year 2008 by the Gault Millau. Monsieur Bouchard's philosophy borders on the revolutionary in Champagne, as he insists on bottling single vineyard, single varietal (Pinot Noir or Chardonnay), and single vintage cuveés. Rather than blending different sources to make a single cuvée. This is a highly unique concept in Champagne, where so many of the Grandes Marques have made their reputations for many centuries on the high art created in blending various wines and various vintages to make a consistently excellent bottle of bubbly year in and year out. However, blending is anathema to Cédric Bouchard, who seeks to create individual wines of great character each year from his single-vineyard bottlings. Each wine is made only from juice from the first pressing, fermented only with indigenous yeast, and handled meticulously in the cellar to guarantee the finest wines possible. Monsieur Bouchard began his career in 2000 by taking a portion of his family's vineyards to begin working on his own. He started out with only 1.37 hectares of vines in the village of Celles-sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar region of Champagne. His approach in the vineyards and in the cellars seeks to maximize quality every step along the way, and consequently, Monsieur Bouchard practices dramatically restricting yields in the vineyard, which can often be rather generous in the Champagne region. All his vines are farmed organically and the grapes are harvested at the optimum moment. There are three distinct bottlings from Monsieur Bouchard's own vineyards, which are all bottled under his Roses de Jeanne label, These include a Blanc de Noirs bottling from the minuscule (nine-tenths of a hectare) vineyard, Les Ursules; a Rosé made from the tiny (.07 hectare) Le Creux d'Enfer vineyard, which is made by the “saignée” method of crushing the pinot noir and running off the juice after several hours of skin contact; and a Blanc de Blancs bottling from the vineyard of Le Haute-Lemblée. Cédric Bouchard has augmented his tiny initial holdings by now working 1.47 hectares of vines owned by his father as well, which he farms with the same meticulous care as his own parcels. From these, he has introduced a new Blanc de Noirs cuvée, which hails from the Val Vilaine vineyard and which he sells under the Champagne Inflorescence label, rather than labeled as Roses de Jeanne. Again, like the wines from his own vineyard parcels, the wine is made entirely from one variety, in this case, pinot noir. All of Monsieur Bouchard's wines are characterized by uniquely soil-driven personalities, with the underlying terroir of each parcel jumping from the glass with a purity of expression that is extremely rare in Champagne. Bouchard believes in a long, slow, and cools second fermentation which creates smaller, finer bubbles and helps to enhance the vinosity of the underlying wine. The wines are produced with very, very low, or no dosage, depending on the vintage, with the goal of allowing the unique terroir of each wine to take center stage. These are brilliant wines made from a young, perfectionist vigneron who is likely to completely revolutionize the landscape of Champagne before he writes the last chapter of his career. The wines are available in minuscule quantities, so it is highly recommended to snap them up immediately when they become available. Paul-Henry's grandfather, in fact, played an instrumental role in establishing the appellation and lobbied hard to include "Morogues" on the label, which he felt was essential since it is unique for its high percentage of Kimmeridgian soils.

The majority of the estate's 40 Ha of vines are situated in and around the village of Morogues. As Paul-Henry explained, “Morogues is comprised of 90% Kimmeridgian limestone. This is why my grandfather pushed so hard to give it the status it deserved”. This limestone is the same blessed soil type that makes up great terroirs of Chablis, Chavignol, and parts of the Aube in Champagne. Whether with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, or Pinot Noir, it helps to create complex, elegant, mineral-laden wines that can age well too. The property is planted to 1/3 Pinot Noir and 2/3 Sauvignon Blanc, including 5 Ha of vines outside of Menetou, in Sancerre proper, which they purchased in the late 70s. Paul-Henry Pellé took over for the family in 2007 and immediately converted to organic viticulture (though not officially certified yet).

Before that, the family had taken a ‘natural¹ approach in the vineyards, working and plowing the soils and avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides. Today, there is a crew of 8 full-time vineyard workers to work the soils and apply organic preps and compost. The most important wine, production-wise, is the Menetou-Salon Blanc “Morogues,” which is made from 7 different hillside vineyards in the village of Morogues. In addition, they make three different “single-vineyard” wines from selected, highly distinctive parcels in Morogues – Le Blanchais, Le Carroir, and Vignes de Ratier. The grapes for all of these cuvées are hand-harvested, a major rarity in this part of the wine world. The fermentations for the Menetou Morogues occur in a majority of tanks with about 15% in wood, both foudres, and 400-liter barrels, though there is a plan to increase the percent of wood élévage moving forward. The single-vineyard wines are raised in 70% wood – also foudres and 400L – with the balance in the tank. These wines are also fermented 100% with indigenous yeasts and are raised for a minimum of 11-12 months before bottling. Like the top wines from Chavignol, these wines drink well on release, but also have the ability to age beautifully for 10-15 years, often longer in top vintages. We understand that Sancerre is just so easy to sell. But if you like great Sancerre (which itself can be a rarity!), we invite you to discover these distinctive, mineral-laden whites and reds from this under-the-radar appellation, Menetou-Salon, and from one of its true masters, Domaine Pellé.

Alcohol: 12.5%

Grape(s): Cortese di Gavi

Localization: Piedmont, Italy

Tasting Notes: Gavi is characterised by an almost Chablis-like mineral quality, with restrained aromas of flowers, wet stones and citrus.

Notes: Fermented in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature.

'Mainìn' is a dialect form of the name Marina; Marina Ghibellini is one of the owners of the estate.
