Later on, in the 1930s they started shipping the wine to Athens and Piraeus. The shipping procedure could be well described as a feast. From Canaves, mule – drivers loaded the goat-skins, filled with wine on to their mules, and carried them to the port of Fira, where they were transferred into barrels of 600 kgs (called bombs).

Then the barrels were loaded on to small boats (caiques) and were shipped to Piraeus. After the end of the 2nd World War and for the following 30 years, most of the Brusco wine was sold to the Kaloyannis distillery, where it was distilled into brandy and a lesser quantity was supplied to the Koniordos family and a number of taverns. In contrast, the Vinsanto wine was obtained by the churches and monasteries for Sacramental use.

In 1973 the Gavalas family established its own wine store in Athens which handled exclusively the sales and distribution, throughout Greece, of the main wines of Santorini: Nyhteri, Brusco, Mezzo, Mandilaria, and Vinsanto.

At the beginning o the 1980s, when the Boutaris company established its own winery on the island, the Gavalas family became the sole supplier of Vinsanto wine to Boutaris for a period of 6 years. It is a well known fact: to be and to remain the owner of a well respected vineyard, one must be endowed with a real aristocracy that identifies itself with the vineyard and the wine. Everything must be sacrificed for this, beginning with interests (…). In order to be a grand cru owner, you must in some way be in love with it… ”His son Georges and then his grandson, Jean, succeeded him as the head of the estate. Under their guidance, Talbot became one of the most famous growths in the Bordeaux region.Following the death of Jean Cordier, his daughters Lorraine and Nancy, took over the reins of Talbot. Enriched with the still vivid memory of knowledge and experience of past generations which preceded them, Lorraine and Nancy worked together to do justice to this Grand Cru with all the talent and respect that it deserved. Today Nancy Bignon Cordier, her husband Jean-Paul, their children Philippine, Marguerite and Gustave Bignon pursue the story of Talbot; a long history which has always united with passion the destiny of a family to that of a vineyard.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/d7e7fd46ae001b616cb570f2f8699c83930b7c6f.png?v=1768847846
ilcivettaiopoggioalcommessario
Il Civettaio Poggio Al Commessario 2021 (Email Sale, Arrives 6/24)

Alcohol: 14%

Grape(s): Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Localization: Tuscany, Italy

Tasting Notes: An everyday wine, a real crowd-pleasing wine. Where was the fruit grown? Where did it come from? How regarded is the vineyard in terms of its terroir? Pierre Bart is the current generation and beating heart of Domaine Bart. Bart’s grandmother is from the same family as Côte de Nuits icon Bruno Clair, and she brought an impressive collection of vines to the table when Domaine Bart was first established in the mid-1900s: small but priceless parcels in Grand Crus Bonnes-Mares and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Over the years, the Bart family acquired vines in Chambolle and Gevrey, and with them, the capacity to produce an impressive pantheon of powerful, new oak-aged, quite expensive reds that faithfully represent the diversity of top Côte de Nuits terroirs. There are no premier cru or grand cru vineyards in Marsannay, which is part of the reason the Bart wines are so affordable. The region became a village-level commune in 1987 and is known for its beautiful rosés and fresh, drinkable reds. We love Marsannay for its classic Burgundian character—lots of cranberry and tart cherry with foresty notes—and its simple charm. The Bart wines, for example, offer tremendous regional character for very reasonable prices. The village of Fixin, which is just south of Marsannay, does have a few premier cru vineyard sites and Bart also has premier cru property there. Bart's "Les Hervelets" holdings actually stem from an older Domaine once known as Claire-Daü that was split between Bart and Bruno Clair in 1985. Claire-Daü was once the premier producer in the region and the quality of its wines is much of the reason Marsannay gained village-level status. We like to think of wines like the Bart "Les Hervelets" as great short-term cellar candidates, wines that will improve greatly in the three to the five-year window as the tannins soften up a bit and the acidity unwinds. "Les Hervelets" is known for producing wines that are a bit softer and more feminine than other vineyards in the region.

Alcohol: 13.5%

Grapes: 100% Sangiovese

Location: Tuscany, Italy

Tasting Note: Clear ruby red color with clean aromas of wild rose, black currant and sour black cherry. Laura was mother to three rough-and-tumble boys and immediately bonded with Lia. Thus began the tradition of yearly visits where during the warm summer days and nights Laura would instill in Lia an appreciation for Italian culture, history, music and most of all art. Laura’s presence in Lia’s life would inspire her as a mother, cook, vintner and businessperson and after graduating with degrees in art and economics and starting a family of her own, Lia would continue to visit her Aunt Laura with her own children growing this family bond.

In 2004 an opportunity arose to write a new chapter in the story, this time at Tolaini Winery in Castelnuovo Berardenga with the production of Lia’s own wine label Donna Laura. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7-day cold soak, 2 + weeks of fermentation, and 1 + week extended maceration). From the press, the wine was transferred directly into a neutral barrel (15+-year-old French oak), where it remained sur lie without sulfur until July when it was gently racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August. Rita Hills. The highly unusual east-west (or transverse) mountain range, close proximity to the cold Pacific, consistent coastal fog, and steady afternoon breezes together create ideal conditions for growing cold-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Ron Melville and his sons recognized that these exceptional conditions, combined with their commitment to “wine growing,” would result in wines of remarkable quality. Melville Vineyards was established in 1996 in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills and has since become one of the most highly-regarded estates in California.

With the guidance of Head Winegrower, Chad Melville, Melville’s full-time vineyard crew nurtures their 120 estate acres organically, paying close attention to the health of both the vines and the soil. Farming aggressively, yet carefully, and with the utmost respect to Mother Nature, helps encourage the vines to produce small amounts of intensely flavored/concentrated fruit. At the time of harvest, they consider the wines to already be made and strive to not interfere with their natural path in the cellar. To this effect, they maintain a minimalist approach by aging their wines only in neutral French oak and stainless steel and utilize whole cluster fermentation to contribute to the depth, structure, and complexity of their wines.

Alcohol: 15%

Grape(s): Grenache

Localization: Languedoc, South of France, France

Tasting Notes: Domaine Lafage Cuvee Nicolas is a bright ruby color. He planned to work a few years, make some money, then go back home, buy a farm, marry his high school sweetheart and make some good wine... and not with his feet this time! It took Pierluigi 45 years before he returned with a clear vision of the high-quality wine he wanted to make: one of Italy's best, no less. In 1998 he returned to his native land and purchased some of the best lands in the region of Chianti Classico in the noted commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga. He constructed, from the roots up, this state-of-the-art winery and brought together the best technology and winemakers to bring to light wines that would be a true expression of this significant region. Pierluigi hired famed enologist Michel Rolland and Tuscan agronomist Andrea Paoletti, who put together a team that shares Pierluigi's vision - to make the best wines possible with one vitally unique ingredient - the terroir of Chianti Classico's southernmost commune: Castelnuovo Berardenga. A true marriage of tradition and modern technology. The belief in the "best fruit produces the best wine" is the fundamental principle of the Tolaini estate. High-density planting per hectare and low yield per plant is a proven strategy worldwide in producing excellent quality fruit. With up to 11,500 plants per hectare in the less hilly vineyards, drip irrigation for each plant, and two green harvests to pre-select the healthiest and most promising bunches on the vine, the Tolaini property produces fruit of unsurpassable quality. This fruit is evident in every mouthful of the estate's four incredible red wines.

Ruggero Mazzilli is Tolaini's consulting agronomist and is based in Gaiole in Chianti where he is the owner and founder of SPEVIS (The Experimental Station for Sustainable Viticulture). Under Ruggero's supervision Panzano in Chianti became the first Bio-Distretto (Organic District) in the world, immediately followed by San Gimignano and Gaiole in Chianti. SPEVIS works with the best scientific research institutes to find new solutions to practical vineyard issues by following the principles of organic agriculture and respectful environmental practices. With Ruggero as part of the team, Tolaini will continue to cultivate the maximum expression of Chianti Classico terroir while farming organically and sustainably.

Like the vineyards surrounding it, the winery at Tolaini Estate is an expression of both old and new. An optical sorter guarantees that only the healthy whole grapes make it into the fermentation vats. The best grapes from each harvest are fermented in open-top fermenters made of French Allier oak (12 units of 4500-liter capacity), a time-proven touch that increases the complexity of the wines. The generous array of tank sizes allows for individual parcels of grapes to be fermented and stored separately. Lirac wines have been produced in the Southern Rhone Valley since before Roman times, when they were favorites of the kings and popes of Avignon. In the late 1700’s, production was high, but in 1863 phylloxera hit. The area struggled to recover until the early 1900’s. In the 1930’s, Count Henri de Régis began working to improve the quality of wines, vintage after vintage. In 1945, he obtained the highest distinction, a cru, of the Côtes du Rhône. Lirac is the oldest recorded wine of the Côtes du Rhône region, and was the first to be produced in red, white and rosé. This single-vineyard Champagne from the noblest of terroirs in Ambonnay is 100% Pinot Noir from 70-year-old vines; the wine spends 51 months on its lees, and is fermented in barrel. "Crayeres" covers itself with the thinest of Champagne soil, yet its heart is pure, solid chalk. The nose is a sensual feast—cinnamon and cardamom; the zest of lemons and limes; candied ginger, cherries and crushed stones. Lush and almost thick on the palate, "Crayeres" shows notes of currants and strawberries, reminding of a still red wine. This is truly the benchmark for all great Pinot Noir Champagne—perhaps for all Champagne.

97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Disgorged this spring, the new rendition of Egly's NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Les Crayères is a blend of the 2014 and 2013 vintages. It continues this cuvée's run of exceptional quality, unwinding in the glass with complex aromas of pear and peach mingled with Meyer lemon, orange oil, buttered toast, white flowers, praline and smoke. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's vinous and concentrated, with tangy acids that girdle its chiseled core of fruit. Long and penetrating, it concludes with a saline finish. I suspect this is likely to evolve along similar lines to its 2009-2008 counterpart: which is to say, superbly.

The Domain: Winemaker Francis Egly has earned a place at the very top of the grower Champagne elite, and his wines have achieved "cult" status.

You'll find Egly Champagne on the wine lists of the world's three-star restaurants. Their ambition was to establish a small, sustainable estate vineyard that would produce world-class Rhônes and Bordeauxs. By 2005, Jack Messina, the original founder, had named his 55-acre estate, Jada. These traits embody the values and purpose that go into making the Jada wines. When my family purchased this land 22 years ago, we had a “small, big dream” – to produce some of the most sought-after wines in the world and all from our estate vineyard. We never wanted to be the biggest, just to only use the best from our organically farmed vineyard in each Jada wine. That mission remains true today with the Riboli Family.

“Terroir” is an overused term that can imply different things for different producers when we talk about expressing it in our wines. For Jada, however, it literally refers to the fact that we make wine from land we have lived on and worked on for over two decades. It’s a unique and special bond we have with our pocket of hills off the Santa Lucia Coastal Range in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles and something we express in each of the Jada wines.

This bond underscores our respect for the land and the wines we make. That respect extends to the amount of wine we make each year. We believe excellence is found in the small, sustainable things of this world – small batches of carefully crafted wines, a small team of winemakers who fret and focus over every detail from the vineyard to the winemaking, and a small, family-run winery with a knowledgeable crew of Wine Educators with a similar passion for limited production, estate wines.

All this attention to detail should reinforce our singular goal, often summed up by my father in one phrase: “Our wines should be so darn good, you keep coming back to them year after year.” We feel you and the special people in your life deserve nothing less from us.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/files/JhFXn4LKSV2Ub4NoBrpiGw_pb_600x600_68eea927-7785-4251-a05a-a701d5c0db59.png?v=1774113470
luigi-e-lucina-pinot-grigio-2023
Luigi e Lucina Pinot Grigio 2024

Alcohol: 11%

Grape(s): 100% Pinot Grigio

Location: Veneto, Italy

Tasting Notes: This wine is known for its bright citrusy fruit, with hints of ripe pear and apple.
