An oak forest cut down between 1490 and 1542 was replaced by “plantings of vines and trees”, and the old name “Bosco di Gica” (“Gica Wood”) no longer seemed appropriate. The new name, “Zardin” (“Garden”), meanwhile, was perfectly suited to the charm of this rediscovered land. In a land register entry of 1717, it was changed to “Zardini” and subsequent Napoleonic and Austrian maps gave it the name of “Giardino”. The medieval intuition regarding the innate qualities of this land for wine growing was reflected in the subsequent viticultural approach. This is difficult territory, but one which is generous to those who dedicate their energies to its steep slopes. The soil is chalky, lean, and shallow, lying directly on the bedrock, which emerges in places. The vines cling to chestnut poles in south-facing parallel rows, echoing the typical uneven contours of these slopes. The incessant, painstaking care needed to farm here confirms the “cru” status of this vineyard.

The result is a “dry” wine, which brings together all the qualities of the Prosecco area: elegance, harmony and freshness, but above all fruit salad aromas. This recognition of merit is just one of the many awards our wines have received, that we still today remember with affection and pride. It is one of the blackest Brunellos you will find in this report. This rich red wine takes a little longer to open because those primary aromas are buried deep under all that bulk and power. Indeed, this wine is almost too much of a good thing. It moves with slow-motion laziness, and the bouquet is in absolutely no rush to show what it has in store. The wines produced here perfectly reflect the world-class terroir and winemaking skills, from their Valpolicella, Superiore and Ripasso right through to their Amarone and Recioto. The wines of Fratelli Degani truly show the magic of the Valpolicella region.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/Head-valpolicella-ripasso-1_18d899b7-ee87-43a7-9c3a-aa8e6c5774dc.jpg?v=1608057458
roccolo-grassi-valpolicella-superiore-2019
Roccolo Grassi Valpolicella Superiore 2019

Alcohol: 14,5%

Grape(s): 60% Corvina, 15% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina

Localization: Veneto, Italy

Tasting Notes: A red astonishes with its complexity and elegance with which he offers, a Valpolicella Superiore that gives us spicy notes of white pepper and tobacco, with nuances of graphite and coffee and return of cherry and red berries.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/fa38f360ad1356432cfcd120357d83393057e721.jpg?v=1775324283
viettibarolocastiglione2017
Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2021

Alcohol: 13.5%

Grape(s): 100% Nebbiolo

Localization: Piedmont, Italy

Tasting Notes: On the nose explosive, opulent, charming and immediate. His son Giacomo inherited the vineyard as well as the nickname, which he gave to the winery. Raffaella is responsible for sales and marketing, while Beppe is in charge of the wine making and managing the agricultural part. Wine is their life. This love has also conquered their partners who have become active members of the family: Cristina, Beppe's wife and mother of Greta and Giacomo, works in administration, while Raffaella’s husband, Norbert Reinisch-Bologna, an Austrian doctor, is Braida's export director. With the goal of further reducing our environmental impact, the 2008 winery expansion utilized various technical improvements with the aim of energy conservation, such as solar panels, a geothermal system and finally, the use of wetland specifically set up for wastewater purification. The Conterno Fantino winery styles its wines with the primary goal of reflecting their own identity: from painstaking manual selection of fruit to harvest by hand using small crates; from preserving the aromas of the vineyard with spontaneous fermentation from indigenous yeasts (no commercial yeast is used here); from the careful use of wood for the ageing of the wines to the minimal use of sulfites, right up to the bottle ageing.
This seemingly complex path is the most natural for us.
Our wine is the offspring of the land in which the wines are cultivated, and once in the winery must be brought up, step by step, as if it were a member of the family.
Our wine is one of us.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/7e97ed3904f8f156ca9ee7eba0c40c695b168c13.jpg?v=1765752450
ilcivettaiopoggioalcommessario
Il Civettaio Poggio Al Commessario 2021

Alcohol: 14%

Grape(s): Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot

Localization: Tuscany, Italy

Tasting Notes: An everyday wine, a real crowd-pleasing wine. In this cluster of houses, the Veglio family has been dedicated to working the land for generations. To be a farmer in the Langhe meant bending over the vines, cultivating orchards and gardens, raising livestock, and inventing new ways of getting by every day. It was a difficult life. Angelo Veglio, born in 1928, would pass the winters by visiting the farmhouses as a “masacrin,” or a sort of butcher on a house call, particularly for the preparation of salami. During the summer, after working in the fields he would travel to the market in Canale, where he sold the few peaches his orchards produced. Angelo had a dream: leave the life of a sharecropper and working in agriculture to dedicate himself to making wine; and purchase vineyards and bottle wine under his name, using native Langhe grapes—above all, Nebbiolo, in which he had the foresight to recognize quality and potential.

"We were born and grew up in the hills of Barolo: a territory that has sustained us, whose people have helped us grow up, and whose wine we have fallen in love with, to which we dedicate our lives and our passion".

Alcohol: 12,5%

Grape(s): Barbera

Localization: Piedmont, Italy

Tasting notes: An everyday Italian red: flavors of fresh red and black fruits, juicy acidity, and a hint of earthy oakiness that makes it ever so slightly more serious. Laura was mother to three rough-and-tumble boys and immediately bonded with Lia. It appears to have been introduced by the Greeks in their Southern Italian colonies around 800 or 700 BC. Among the most commonly mentioned historical evidence is the discovery of a Roman wine press in Rionero in Vulture, as well as an ancient bronze coin found in the Venosa area, depicting Dionysus (Bacchus in the Roman transposition), a Greek god. As for literary citations, possibly none deserves a mention more than the famous odes to wine written by Roman poet Horace, a native of Venosa. The origin of the name is quite uncertain, if not even mysterious. For many years, people believed that the term Aglianico came from ancient Greek – confirming its ancient Greek etymology – and that the original word was “crippled” during the Aragonese domination to become Aglianico. According to another theory – introduced by Manuela Piancastelli – the term Aglianico derives from the Greek word “agleukinosicos” or “wine without sugar/glucose.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/aglianico-del-vulture-dangelo-800x1200-2-png--1.png?v=1775248639
degani-amarone
Degani La Rosta Amarone della Valpolicella 2020

Alcohol: 15,5%

Grape(s): Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, Altre

Localization: Veneto, Italy

Tasting Notes: Intense garnet red in color, this wine is rich, full-bodied, and firm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/files/aJjaCMX9RWmBD0PbtaGOhQ_pb_600x600_56e8860c-7979-4641-bb5f-3c82f3b95df7.png?v=1775249840
vietti-dolcetto-dalba-2020
Vietti Dolcetto D'Alba Tre Vigne 2024

Alcohol: 12.5%

Grape(s): 100% Dolcetto

Localization: Piedmont, Italy

Tasting Notes: Purple red color with light blue hues. It also shows an impressive richness of flavors with dried cherry, licorice, pressed violets, balsam herb, and dusty limestone. Today's winemaking team, led by Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci, is firmly committed to maintaining Altesino’s hard-earned reputation as a Montalcino institution and a global leader in innovative winemaking. Amid the eastern hills of Montalcino near Siena in central Tuscany, stands the magnificently elegant 14th century-built Palazzo Altesi, home to the Altesino winery and a marvelous resort. The ancient coat of arms, carved in white Carrara marble, is still visible above the antique oak portal. The stunning Palazzo Altesi beautifully reflects Altesino’s charm and refinement. Though the worldwide reputation of Brunello has encouraged some conservatism among Montalcino estates, Altesino has always been a leader, unafraid of innovation. The estate pioneered the technique of aging its IGT wines in small French oak barrels, limiting the time spent in oak to enhance each wine’s personality. The resulting wines were a groundbreaking improvement over those produced by traditional methods. No longer overwhelmed by wood, they were able to display the unique characteristics of the fruit, with softened tannins and perfect balance. Not content to rest on its laurels, Altesino became the first Montalcino estate to introduce the concept of cru wines, made with a special selection of grapes from a single vineyard. Its Montosoli Brunello, named after the prestigious vineyard, was the first of these wines and is still considered among the region's finest. Altesino also pioneered the concept of Brunello futures (wine purchased before its release) with its 1985 vintage. This commitment to innovation led to many modern wines in the estate's portfolio, including Alte d’Altesi, Palazzo Altesi, and Rosso di Altesino. Elegance, finesse, and a fruitier, richer style are the trademarks of Altesino’s wines and have earned the estate a position among the very top producers of Brunello. This achievement is even more impressive considering Brunello is perhaps the most recognized Italian appellation.

Alcohol: 12.5%

Grape(s): Pinot Grigio

Localization: Friuli, Italy

Tasting Notes: The bouquet is very pleasant with a good array of varietal aromas such as pear Williams, banana, apricot, and Acacia flowers. The history follows vintner Lia Tolaini Banville from her birthplace in Canada to her ancestral home outside the city of Lucca, where at the age of six on her family's annual summer holiday, Lia met her Aunt Laura who would become a driving force in in her life . Laura was mother to three rough-and-tumble boys and immediately bonded with Lia. Thus began the tradition of yearly visits where during the warm summer days and nights Laura would instill in Lia an appreciation for Italian culture, history, music and most of all art. Laura's presence in Lia's life would inspire her as a mother, cook,

In 2004 an opportunity arose to write a new chapter in the story, this time in Castelnuovo Berardenga with the production of the Chianti wine label Donna Laura. A loving tribute to the woman whose lessons of family, tradition and honor would share double billing with Lia's own heritage. Roman gods Venus, Bacchus and Cupid personifying Lia's children adorn the labels of Donna Laura Wines, celebrating this legacy of devotion to family and affirming the adage ' Who turns, who turns , always at home goes to end ' - no matter where you go or turn you will always end up at home.

The approach to viticulture and winemaking at Donna Laura reflects the nurturing, wholesome environment shaped by these strong women. In the vineyards an absolute respect for the soil, vines and future of the land is cultivated through careful and constant attention. These practices include green harvesting as necessary, planting cover crops to enrich the nutrients in the soil and forgoing the use of harmful chemicals to maintain a pristine and sustainable ecosystem in optimal balance. In the winery organic principles are applied by incorporating modern technology, sparing usage of sulfites and a sterile environment all while honoring the traditions of this historic region.
