An oak forest cut down between 1490 and 1542 was replaced by “plantings of vines and trees”, and the old name “Bosco di Gica” (“Gica Wood”) no longer seemed appropriate. The new name, “Zardin” (“Garden”), meanwhile, was perfectly suited to the charm of this rediscovered land. In a land register entry of 1717, it was changed to “Zardini” and subsequent Napoleonic and Austrian maps gave it the name of “Giardino”. The medieval intuition regarding the innate qualities of this land for wine growing was reflected in the subsequent viticultural approach. This is difficult territory, but one which is generous to those who dedicate their energies to its steep slopes. The soil is chalky, lean, and shallow, lying directly on the bedrock, which emerges in places. The vines cling to chestnut poles in south-facing parallel rows, echoing the typical uneven contours of these slopes. The incessant, painstaking care needed to farm here confirms the “cru” status of this vineyard.

The result is a “dry” wine, which brings together all the qualities of the Prosecco area: elegance, harmony and freshness, but above all fruit salad aromas. This is a wine that already in 1933 was selected as one of the best from Valdobbiadene, and was sent to represent the area at the 1st Mostra di Vini Tipici d’Italia, held in Siena between 3 and 18 August 1933. This recognition of merit is just one of the many awards our wines have received, that we still today remember with affection and pride. This is why the Giardino Vineyard has become Adami’s standard-bearer. The dream of giving rise to an important production experience, with deep ties to the land and its ability to generate life, history and culture. More than thirty years ago he decided to valorize Sicilian wine-making traditions to achieve excellence through the production of high-quality wine, in a period in which it seemed this was a long way from being even remotely conceivable, based on the few others that had embarked on this process. The world of high-quality wine, at least in Sicily, was just beginning and Salvatore Di Gaetano, a young businessman devoted to his land, could already glimpse the enormous potential offered by Sicily as a wine-making region. A miniature continent, capable of encompassing absolutely everything: from the high mountains to the sea, from compact clay soils to those that emerged from the sea, not to mention the lava sands of Etna. Then there are the vines, the sun and the spiralling wind.

Firriato is a unit of measurement, a clear concept, the result of a business decision capable of transforming itself into promise and devotion. Recalling a production history that holds such importance for the world of high-quality Sicilian wine in a few brief lines could result in a rash and inadequate summary. Because Firriato is a company that is a living, warm-blooded organism that thrives on nature, identity, and passion. We are in the province of Trapani, one of the most magical parts of the wine region of Sicily, where centuries of vine growing have given this area a natural ability to produce wines with a strong sense of identity. It was the start of the eighties when Salvatore Di Gaetano, a businessman with a passion for his homeland, saw the right elements in this picture-postcard landscape to bear the fruit of his freely declared passion: high-quality wine. Firriato is the crowning achievement of this dream, a company that in three decades has become one of the biggest production companies in Sicily, a reference for Made in Italy excellence acknowledged all over the world. Right from the onset, Salvatore Di Gaetano has gambled on the oenological potential of traditional vines. Nero d’Avola, Perricone, and Nerello Mascalese, but also Zibibbo, Grillo, and Catarratto, with Firriato, have all become wines that have crossed the oceans, reaching far away cities and entering into the heart of enthusiastic wine lovers. Harmonium, Ribeca, and Santagostino are wines that have made the company famous, along with its lead players. Wines of the utmost prestige, bearing witness to a production style capable of giving due value to wines produced in Sicily. Harvest after harvest, Firriato has implemented a modern wine-making plan based on viticulture that enhances and valorizes the varietal features of every vine planted. A production philosophy that in just a few years has become the unmistakable mark of a style that has led to the production of wines with a strong sense of identity. They are recognizable right from the first sip, have been awarded accolades from critics, and are enjoyed by wine lovers all over the world. Over the years, the challenge became even more exciting when the company set itself the goal of presenting new wines that are a perfect reflection of Sicily. The original production area in the countryside of Trapani was increased, investing in Etna and the Aegadian Islands. The new estates, Cavanera on the volcano and Calamoni on Favignana, have enabled Firriato to present itself to the world with a complexity of soil and climate conditions that only Sicily manages to encompass in one large land bathed in sunlight.

Firriato’s strength lies in the consistent choices it has made. After formulating their flagship Rosso Vermouth, the team turned their attention to (re)creating an increasing collection of heritage spirits, using ingredients from both Piedmont and around the world, coupled with painstaking research and abiding love for the drinking traditions of Italy.

Alcohol: 13%

Grape(s): Vermentino

Localization: Liguria, Italy

Tasting Notes: The Vermentino ‘Grey Label’ is all about freshness and it is considered by many the best expression of true Ligurian Vermentino. A dream come true, so much so that, in the Sixties, it even conquered the President of the French Republic Charles De Gaulle. In 1973 the baton passed to Giancarlo Palla, who made an equally important contribution to the territory. Barbera has documented roots back to the 17th century but is probably much older. The Barbera d’Alba region is much smaller than the Asti or Monferrato regions where Barbera can also be grown, and it sometimes gets overshadowed by Nebbiolo, but we recommend NOT overlooking this grape, particularly at this price!

Alcohol: 14%

Grape(s): Nero D'Avola

Localization: Sicily, Italy

Tasting Notes: Dark ruby red in color, this wine offers intense fruit notes with heavy cherry aromas. Through the years, the two founders were joined by Alda, Fabio and Elisa Fantino in various roles. Soon, Noemi and Matteo will join them. In all, during peak times, the winery employs about 10 people. Environmental sustainability, preserving biodiversity, respect of the land and its heritage are the guiding principles in our vineyards, which are organically cultivated (as certified by CCPB). With the goal of further reducing our environmental impact, the 2008 winery expansion utilized various technical improvements with the aim of energy conservation, such as solar panels, a geothermal system and finally, the use of wetland specifically set up for wastewater purification. The Conterno Fantino winery styles its wines with the primary goal of reflecting their own identity: from painstaking manual selection of fruit to harvest by hand using small crates; from preserving the aromas of the vineyard with spontaneous fermentation from indigenous yeasts (no commercial yeast is used here); from the careful use of wood for the ageing of the wines to the minimal use of sulfites, right up to the bottle ageing.
This seemingly complex path is the most natural for us.
Our wine is the offspring of the land in which the wines are cultivated, and once in the winery must be brought up, step by step, as if it were a member of the family.
Our wine is one of us.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/7e97ed3904f8f156ca9ee7eba0c40c695b168c13.jpg?v=1765752450
le-fraghe-bardolino-chiaretto-rodon-rose-2025
Le Fraghe Bardolino Chiaretto Rodon Rosé 2025

Alcohol: 12%

Grape(s): Corvina, Rondinella

Localization: Veneto, Italy

Tasting Notes: Cherry red with rich purple highlights, Rodòn boasts a complex mosaic of well-defined, very fragrant aromas. In this cluster of houses, the Veglio family has been dedicated to working the land for generations. To be a farmer in the Langhe meant bending over the vines, cultivating orchards and gardens, raising livestock, and inventing new ways of getting by every day. It was a difficult life. Angelo Veglio, born in 1928, would pass the winters by visiting the farmhouses as a “masacrin,” or a sort of butcher on a house call, particularly for the preparation of salami. During the summer, after working in the fields he would travel to the market in Canale, where he sold the few peaches his orchards produced. Angelo had a dream: leave the life of a sharecropper and working in agriculture to dedicate himself to making wine; and purchase vineyards and bottle wine under his name, using native Langhe grapes—above all, Nebbiolo, in which he had the foresight to recognize quality and potential.

"We were born and grew up in the hills of Barolo: a territory that has sustained us, whose people have helped us grow up, and whose wine we have fallen in love with, to which we dedicate our lives and our passion".

Alcohol: 13.5%

Grape(s): Kerner

Localization: Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Tasting notes: A particular specialty of the Valle Isarco. The history follows vintner Lia Tolaini Banville from her birthplace in Canada to her ancestral home outside the city of Lucca, where at the age of six on her family’s annual summer holiday, Lia met her Aunt Laura who would become a driving force in her life. Laura was mother to three rough-and-tumble boys and immediately bonded with Lia. Thus began the tradition of yearly visits where during the warm summer days and nights Laura would instill in Lia an appreciation for Italian culture, history, music and most of all art. Laura’s presence in Lia’s life would inspire her as a mother, cook, vintner and businessperson and after graduating with degrees in art and economics and starting a family of her own, Lia would continue to visit her Aunt Laura with her own children growing this family bond.

In 2004 an opportunity arose to write a new chapter in the story, this time at Tolaini Winery in Castelnuovo Berardenga with the production of Lia’s own wine label Donna Laura. It appears to have been introduced by the Greeks in their Southern Italian colonies around 800 or 700 BC. Among the most commonly mentioned historical evidence is the discovery of a Roman wine press in Rionero in Vulture, as well as an ancient bronze coin found in the Venosa area, depicting Dionysus (Bacchus in the Roman transposition), a Greek god. As for literary citations, possibly none deserves a mention more than the famous odes to wine written by Roman poet Horace, a native of Venosa. The origin of the name is quite uncertain, if not even mysterious. For many years, people believed that the term Aglianico came from ancient Greek – confirming its ancient Greek etymology – and that the original word was “crippled” during the Aragonese domination to become Aglianico. According to another theory – introduced by Manuela Piancastelli – the term Aglianico derives from the Greek word “agleukinosicos” or “wine without sugar/glucose.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0149/9247/4212/products/aglianico-del-vulture-dangelo-800x1200-2-png--1.png?v=1775248639
fontodi-flaccianello-della-pieve-2018
Fontodi "Flaccianello Della Pieve" 2018

Alcohol: 15%

Grape(s): 100% Sangiovese

Localization: Colli Toscana Centrale IGT, Chianti, Italy

Tasting Notes: From an iconic vintage that gave generously to all grape varieties across almost all of Tuscany, this wine ranks high on the Fontodi billboard of greatest hits. The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time. It puts on quite a show with a solid core of dark fruit followed by smoke, spice, tar, licorice and delicate blue flower. On previous tastings of this vintage, I had scored it 97 and 97+ points, respectively. I'm going down one point at this sitting because the wine's fiber has unraveled, ever so slightly, at the edges. It still maintains that solid core, but the wine has taken an important jump forward in its evolution these past three years. Evidently, it is currently in a phase of relaxation and unwinding. Beautifully polished notes of Mediterranean herb and dried mint appear on the long, glossy finish. However, only at the beginning of the 20th century did the Vietti name become a winery offering its own wines in bottle. Patriarch Mario Vietti, starting from 1919 made the first Vietti wines, selling most of the production in Italy. His most significant achievement was to transform the family farm, engaged in many fields, into a grape-growing and wine-producing business.

Then, in 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti’s husband) continued to produce high-quality wines from their own vineyards and purchased grapes. The Ceretto family has always been committed to producing the most expressive and authentic wines their land can yield.

Alcohol: 14.5%

Grape(s): Sangiovese

Localization: Tuscany, Italy

Tasting Notes: Brunello is Argiano’s soul and identity: elegant, fine, and at the same time, body and long aging. It shows a lovely transparency to its appearance and follows with lifted red fruit aromas, cassis, wild cherry, and blue flower.

95 Points Wine Spectator: Rose, strawberry, and cherry aromas and flavors are the main themes in this red, along with wild herb, mineral, and cut hay accents. The winery, recently renovated and restructured, was founded in 1902 by Pietro Castellani, a passionate and dedicated grape grower and wine-maker.

The Castellani family, currently in its fourth generation, continues with the same commitment and passion the work began by Pietro more than one hundred years ago. All phases of the wine-making process, cultivation of the highest quality grapes, grape harvest, vinification, aging, and marketing are carried out directly by the family. Particular attention and care are given to the delicate process of grape drying or “appassimento” that is essential for the making of Recioto and Amarone, the region’s greatest and most noble wines.

While the new winery demonstrates great aesthetic taste it is above all highly practical and functional. By exploiting the natural topography of the land the new winery has been designed without the need to use pumps for moving musts and wine around the winery. As the different phases of the process of vinification are carried out on different levels of the winery we are able to exploit the force of gravity for shifting volumes of must or wine around the winery. In this way, the wine is not subjected to the violent impact that is typical of a pump and ensures better preservation of all the wine’s inherent qualities.

The particular micro-climate, soil composition, and hill-side topography of this vineyard provide all the necessary conditions for the making of a red wine of great pedigree. We have made a conscious decision to use all the grapes from this vineyard for the making of this wine, thus eliminating the selection of the best grapes for the making of an Amarone, as tends to be common practice in the Valpolicella region. We have also chosen not to employ the currently fashionable technique of “ripasso” which involves macerating the must of another wine with the pressings of Amarone as we feel the grapes are of such a high quality that this “corrective” measure is unnecessary.
