An oak forest cut down between 1490 and 1542 was replaced by “plantings of vines and trees”, and the old name “Bosco di Gica” (“Gica Wood”) no longer seemed appropriate. The new name, “Zardin” (“Garden”), meanwhile, was perfectly suited to the charm of this rediscovered land. In a land register entry of 1717, it was changed to “Zardini” and subsequent Napoleonic and Austrian maps gave it the name of “Giardino”. The medieval intuition regarding the innate qualities of this land for wine growing was reflected in the subsequent viticultural approach. This is difficult territory, but one which is generous to those who dedicate their energies to its steep slopes. The soil is chalky, lean, and shallow, lying directly on the bedrock, which emerges in places. The vines cling to chestnut poles in south-facing parallel rows, echoing the typical uneven contours of these slopes. The incessant, painstaking care needed to farm here confirms the “cru” status of this vineyard.

The result is a “dry” wine, which brings together all the qualities of the Prosecco area: elegance, harmony and freshness, but above all fruit salad aromas. This recognition of merit is just one of the many awards our wines have received, that we still today remember with affection and pride. Much of their success comes from Colheita Ports - old Tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheita Ports has established them as the stand-out producer of this style. Barros leaves their Colheita Ports to mature in cask until being hand bottled to order. The loss of wine from evaporation (known as the 'Angel's Share') is much higher in comparison to bottle aging. It is a sacrifice they are willing to make and one that helps them achieve unsurpassed quality in their Colheita wines. Bunches undergo a short maceration before they are pressed. The wine displays the slightly wild, lively character of the red Hondarrabi Beltza variety. There is also the single-varietal red Ameztoi Stimatum. It is one of the blackest Brunellos you will find in this report. This rich red wine takes a little longer to open because those primary aromas are buried deep under all that bulk and power. Indeed, this wine is almost too much of a good thing. It moves with slow-motion laziness, and the bouquet is in absolutely no rush to show what it has in store. At its leisure, it will deliver dried blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, spice, campfire ash and sticky tar. There is some tannic astringency that will (hopefully) integrate with time. The estate focuses solely on the production of Sangiovese, generally creating two expressions each year; a Rosso di Montalcino and a Brunello di Montalcino – and, in the very best years, the single-vineyard Madonna Del Piano. The grapes from the vineyards Filai Lunghu, Lago, Cipressi and Nova are used for the Rosso di Montalcino, while those from the Poggio, Pievecchina, Pratea and Sferracavallo are reserved for the Brunello di Montalcino. After his father sold the family business in 1970, Johnny committed himself to learning the craft of port-making on his own. From age 20, he worked in the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, on the rabelo boats bringing barrels of young port downriver, and in the cellars and tasting rooms of Vila Nova da Gaia. Apprenticing under the studied eye of port master John Smithe of Cockburn Smithe’s, Johnny quickly learned the art of winemaking and by his late 20s had developed a reputation as one of the trade’s best tasters.

Johnny could have had his pick of winemaking roles at the top vintage houses, but that wasn’t his style. Port was more than a trade to Johnny: it was his passion and art. He was not content to be a steward of a heritage style. He wanted to make his own mark on the 200-year-old Douro D.O.C. and bring a new style to port drinkers around the world.

Thus, at just 29 years old he set out to do something crazy: found an official port shipper in the ancient entrepot of Vila Nova de Gaia, which no one had done in over 50 years.

In a partnership with his wife and two brothers, Churchill’s was born, producing its first vintage in 1982, more than a full year before officially qualifying as a registered port shipper. He had long had his eye on the 50 hectare grade-A vineyard, going back to his days with Cockburn-Smithe’s in the 1970s. Owning and operating its own vineyard was a watershed moment for the start-up Churchill’s, providing control over grape supply for the first time and paving the way for entrance into Douro still wines.

In 2002, Johnny teamed up with young Portuguese wine maker and fellow wine rogue Ricardo Pinto Nunes, and together they have created the Churchill’s Estates and Quinta da Gricha ranges of still Douro wines.
